The maiden edition of our PopUp Art Class held on Saturday (March 30, 2019) at the Motherless Babies Home in Lekki and it was an exhilarating experience! The sheer joy on the faces of the children made the whole event extremely fulfilling as well as a bit exhausting as we could not match the energies of the children we met.
Scheduled to start off at 10am, it kicked off a little later due to setting up of the tables, easels, palettes, aprons, etc. Even the delay was a learning experience in really understanding what it takes to prepare for such an event, an experience that has made us better. As the day progressed and the children finally got into their activity, we got to see loads of eager smiles as they listened to their instructor and carried out what they were told, almost as they were told.
Arts works from children of the Motherless Babies Home, Lekki, Lagos
From mixing the colours to painting their sunflowers, there was never a dull moment and when it was time for them to sign their names, there was another outburst of joy as each child wanted so much to write their names in full. Where the pieces did not turn out exactly as they should have, they were all still excited and we call them abstract art. After all, everyone’s view is different and expression is solely from the individuals perception. They were all artists. We had members of the Lagos Local Guides team (a Google Local Guides programme) partake of the event and showed their artistic sides even though the pieces painted by the children were absolutely the very best, maybe we are just biased towards the children.

Do note that you might not see much of the fun and smiles on the faces of the children, as we had to respect child protection and privacy laws of the home.

With the inspiration from the children of the Motherless Babies Home in Lekki, we aim to replicate this programme across many more orphanages, schools and organisations and continue with repeated programmes/support of existing partners. It is our hope that with continuous engagement by leveraging nonprofit activities to promote an appreciation of art in children and adults alike, their minds will become more accepting of the limitless opportunities in creativity and finding forms in which to express themselves.
May their smiles never be extinguished and remind us all of what it is to be childlike.
